NORCROSS, GA, October 08, 2014 – StorTrends® today announced that the University of Western Ontario has furthered its investment in the selection of StorTrends high performance storage appliance to deliver continuous availability for videotaped lectures offered online to the Western student community. Using StorTrends hybrid rack-mount storage array, the Canadian university has optimized the storage, playback, sharing and replication of its growing library of video assets.

The University of Western Ontario, or “Western,” delivers an academic experience second to none. Since 1878, The Western Experience has combined academic excellence with life-long opportunities for intellectual, social and cultural growth in order to better serve its communities. With 82 main campus buildings and a full-time enrollment of over 22,000 students, Western attracts individuals with a broad worldview, seeking to study, influence and lead in the international community.

Recently, the university identified and responded to the desire of students and faculty to videotape lectures and make them available online to the Western community. To achieve this, it needed a new media server and a combination of increased storage capacity and performance in order to store, playback, share and replicate the video. As the University of Western Ontario’s IT team began to collect vendor quotes to meet its needs, they also wanted to consider technology that they knew would be reliable. The university had already been using two StorTrends 3200i’s in a virtual environment for nearly seven years with great success.

“When I started here there were already two StorTrends 3200i’s that had been here for about four to five years,” said Clint Bourdeau, Network Systems Specialist, University of Western Ontario. “They ran flawlessly, untouched for about two more years. I didn’t even have to reboot the boxes. I really paid very little attention to them. So, when it was time to add storage for our video project Â- I was already looking in StorTrends’ direction.”

After a comprehensive due diligence, Bourdeau found the StorTrends array offered superior features, functionality and expansion capabilities up to 256TB Â- just what was needed for the university’s video project. The new StorTrends solution was subsequently integrated into Western’s infrastructure with active/active and active/passive configuration support. It delivers extreme throughput capabilities and true enterprise-class performance along with WAN optimization, automated data tiering, and thin provisioning features. As a result, the university now has the perfect solution to meet its demands for lightning fast, highly reliable and highly functional storage for its video streaming needs. It is also expanding the StorTrends solutions utilization to include centralized file storage support for its Hyper-V environment and snapshot backup for data recovery processes.

Key StorTrends features that have benefitted the University of Western Ontario include:
· High-value affordability
· Extreme throughput capabilities
· Enterprise-class performance
· Automated data tiering
· Proven reliability
· Ease of management

“Reliable data availability and protection are keys to the success of every enterprise,” said Justin Bagby, Director of StorTrends. “At StorTrends, we have worked to perfect our proven storage appliances with the security and reliability features organizations need to achieve more with their stored information, without spending more. Organizations such as the University of Western Ontario have done just that Â- worked to deliver innovative functionality to meet the changing demands of their business.”

National Seating and Mobility Boosts Performance and Ensures Data Protection and High Availability

NORCROSS, GA, Sep 03, 2015 – StorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, today announced that National Seating & Mobility (NSM), headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, has deployed StorTrends high performance storage in order to boost storage performance and ensure data protection, high availability (HA), and disaster recovery (DR).

Prior to implementing the StorTrends’ solution, NSM–which specializes in custom mobility, rehabilitation, and adaptive seating systems for those with physical challenges and disabilities–had experienced frequent disk failures that caused backup windows to run much longer than desired. This was due in part to the tremendous growth of the organization over the past 30 years from five locations to a national network of over 1,000 professional Assistive Technology Providers serving clients, therapists, and physicians across the United States. Of necessity, the IT environment expanded as well to include 75 TB of data, supported by 20 HP and Dell physical servers, 50 Hyper-V virtual servers, Dell and Cisco network switches, two Microsoft SQL Server databases, 100 MySQL databases, a custom built ColdFusion based in-house CRM, and a 2010 Microsoft Exchange server with 1,000 users all running in a Windows 7 and 8.1 environment.

With this data growth, NSM knew that its previous solution–a homegrown storage area network (SAN) consisting of multiple older disks for backup–would not suffice long-term. After researching various options, the IT department selected StorTrends high performance storage. StorTrends’ compatibility with Veeam software for onsite production data backup combined with high-speed replication capabilities to an offsite disaster recovery (DR) site were among its many selling points. This NSM took advantage of immediately by deploying a dual controller StorTrends SAN at its primary datacenter in Chattanooga with a mirror StorTrends SAN in Nashville to ensure fast and accurate backup and DR.

“We immediately felt the impact of having a solid backup system in place,” said Nathan Buck, NSM’s Network Manager. “StorTrends has definitely been a Â’set it and forget it’ kind of device. In the past we had disks that would frequently fail. StorTrends provides consistent performance.”

Buck cited additional benefits to using the new solution as well, including the fact that the StorTrends’ device is multi-purpose. While NSM is currently using it for a backup to disk solution, the organization could use it in the future as traditional SAN, or to run it alongside its existing backup system. Buck also credited StorAid™, the StorTrends technical support division, as part of the success of the solution. “The service and support experience has gone extremely well,” explained Buck. “Any time questions arise, they are there to answer our questions quickly and accurately.”
